Emily Wells is a classically trained violinist whose penchant for hip-hop styled production has nabbed a brand new record deal from Partisan Records for her great ability to create hauntingly beautiful compositions using her voice, violin, synthesizers and loops to create a sort of orchestral sound that is pretty damn unique. Her track “Passenger,” leaped out at me, its really something quite different and has a fantastic chilled out vibe.
Her upcoming record, Mama, debuts on Partisan on April 10th.

“Open Your Heart” by The Men // Open Your Heart (2012)
Here’s a blast of that noisy, post punk infused power pop that keeps the blood flowing. The Men are back on Sacred Bones with a new album that’s less dark, foreboding, and more (as Pitchfork put it) Westerberg-ian. Fine be me! It’s been my desire lately to hear more of this - straight forward, well played throwback indie rock sounds, and The Men have pegged me dead bang. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but a must listen for fans of The Replacements, The Fresh & Onlys, and The Wrens (and maybe even a little Rocket from the Crypt).
THE MEN!!!! Leave Home is such an amazing album - I can’t wait to hear their new stuff.
Trampled by Turtles - Victory (Live at KDHX St. Louis)
Fun fact: Trampled by Turtles is from Duluth, MN, which is also the hometown of slowcore vets Low. These bands don’t have a lot in common, but it’s easy to see how a place like Duluth could inspire them both. I’ve been there. It’s cold.
The first taste from the new CHLLNGR EP Datter due February 6th is here! Catch it over at XLR8R.
The Denmark-based producer further explores the more cerebral, haunted pockets of “bass music” further honing in on his moody dub-imprinted sound. Spare and elegant, these meticulously crafted cave dubs marry darker shades of R&B with progressive electronic/drone music and African rhythms. His 2011 debut Haven featured his vocals often chopped up and manipulated in a ghostly fashion, he takes a more direct approach this time around to the vocals often letting the melodies ring out with soulful clarity.
Brown Bird – “Bligewater”
Maybe it’s some mystic musical force that flows from Newport every summer, but it seems like Providence, RI has been a breeding ground for inventive folk-based outfits in the last few years. Following in the path of Deer Tick and The Low Anthem, Brown Bird represents the Americana side of the genre with their rootsy ballads. A little bluegrass, some country and generous helping of blues encapsulate their debut LP Salt for Salt, released a few months back. Brown Bird realizes they don’t need to try to update the genre; rather the band just digs deep to create an honest and authentic sound. Brown Bird are looking to follow up their buzzed-about appearance at last year’s Newport Folk Festival with an equally important run at SXSW, so be on the lookout for a packed schedule for this gem among a crowded Americana scene.
